From 1st September 2023, a new 2-dose shingles vaccine called Shingrix is being used. It is offered to healthy people turning 65 or 70 on or after that date. Because of limited vaccine supply and appointment availability, invitations are being sent in phases, following the official timeline from the UK Health Security Agency.
Who is eligible?
- Healthy people turning 65 or 70 (starting 2023).
- From 2028, people turning 60 and 65.
- From 2033, it will be routine to offer the vaccine at age 60.
- Once you become eligible, you remain eligible until your 80th birthday.
Special eligibility:
If you are 18 or over and have a severely weakened immune system, you are also eligible for the vaccine. This includes people with:
- Certain blood cancers (like leukaemia or lymphoma)
- HIV or AIDS
- Recent stem cell transplant, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or organ transplant
- Those taking medicines that severely weaken the immune system
You will receive 2 doses of the vaccine, given between 8 weeks and 6 months apart.
